Interesting stats

Some figures released by the Mobile Data Association show that nearly 15m people accessed the internet from their mobile phone during October and November last year. Check out the figures here.

Crowd Control

I was reflecting on the stuff so far on my way in and I suddenly remembered something I noticed from the Coventry game last week. We sit 1 block away from the main “choir” and just before they start a chant, there’s a lone voice who starts it off and normally gets about half way thru the first line before everyone else joins in. I remembered at the time thinking how it was a bit like Pele and the ferryman controlling it all and still being part of it.

Jabberwocky

Thought I ought to blog this as it’s a good example of what I hope to do

#!/usr/bin/perl

$brillig and $toves{slithy};
for $gyre ( @wabe ) {} for $gimble ( @wabe ) {}
map { s/^.*$/mimsy/g } @borogoves
and $mome{raths} = outgrabe;

if(my $son = fork) { warn “Beware the Jabberwock!”;
jaws && bite, claws && catch;
warn “Beware the Jubjub bird” and $shun,
$Bandersnatch{frumious} == 1; }else{

$_{hand} = \$sword{vorpal};
seek FOE, $manxome, (4_294_967_296 * time);
sleep ($tree{Tumtum} = $_);
while (study) { stand }

while (study($uffish)) { $_{stand} == 1; }
unless ($Jabberwock = fork) { $Jabberwock{eyes} = flame,
$Jabberwock{movement} = wiffle, $Jabberwock{location} = $wood{tulgey}
+;
while ($coming=1) { burble }}

(1, 2), (1, 2) and through and through;
$sword{vorpal}{blade} = snicker-snack;
(kill 9, $Jabberwock), $head = (chop $Jabberwock);
sub{ return $_, $head }; }

tell $son, “And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?”.
“Come to my arms, my beamish boy! “.
“O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! “,
$_{joy} = chortle if $son;

$brillig and $toves{slithy};
for $gyre ( @wabe ) {} for $gimble ( @wabe ) {}
map { s/^.*$/mimsy/g } @borogoves
and $mome{raths} = outgrabe;

Wolfie

Jamie and I have now decided on a narrative….finally. We’re gonna use Little Red Riding Hood but bring it up to date. Unfortunately, we’re not sure what the wolf should be. Drug dealer, pimp – each could be really good but until we’ve sorted that out, we can’t really start storyboarding it. During our meeting with Mike the other day, he suggested that the wolf needn’t be a person, it could be a place. We’d not considered that before and it has really got us thinking. Maybe a club where she meets people who try to do stuff to her. Anyway, it’s another good idea to chuck into the mix.

It’s a game of 2 verses

Just spent the last couple of hours trawling Google looking for poems about football that I could use. I thought maybe John Cooper Clark or Attila the Stockbroker might have one or two but although they mention it, there’s nothing about a specific match or part of one. I’m sure I’ve seen John Cooper Clark do one – I think a visit to Waterstones might be called for.

SAN meeting

Had our first meeting with the guys from Stoke Damerel today. Hugh and I are teamed up with a couple of year 10 music students. There weren’t a lot of ideas flying around but it was really just a meet and greet meeting to be fair. We’re gonna be taking a field trip to the Prince William Yard in a few weeks to have a look around and get some inspiration for a bit of brainstorming.

Cookies

Now here’s a thing. Apparently browsers on mobile phones can’t handle cookies (excluding Smartphones and the trimmed down version of IE or whatever it’s called)…..but they used to!! In the days of WAP, WML cards and whatnot, they all could cope with cookies. Now though cookies are ignored – so with your 3.2 megapixel onboard camera you can shoot stills and video, listen to your favourite mp3s, text and even talk to people on mobiles but heaven help you wanting it to remember your logon details when you venture on the net with it.

I feel soooo much better now for that. There is a possible alternative with Bango although it is more aimed at m-commerce. Some details about it are at The Register.

Sound project meeting

Jamie and I met up yesterday to discuss working together on our sound projects. She’s looking to expand the functions of a drum kit and I can use my delayStick to play either sounds from the kit or the extended sounds from her gloves back at her so that she can interact and change the beat or whatever. The first obstacle is to get some practice space coz drum kits aren’t small so that’ll be an afternoon ringing church halls and scout huts I guess. I’m also thinking about making a 2nd stick. It’ll be good to have a backup but I can also think about where to put the tilt switches for optimum effect and it might be kinda fun to use 2 at the same time.

Sing when your winning

Argyle have got Coventry tonight which is live on Sky but as well as encouraging them, I shall be researching the chants and in particular the ones that get “sung” at each set of fans. It’s hard work this module. But I also found this site – www.footballchants.org – which lists chants for all English teams. Some seem a bit contrived but all the old favourites are there.

Sound project idea

After talking to Dan on Thursday, he suggested teaming up with someone else and running their output thru my stick and playing it back at them. He thought Jamie might be a good person especially as she’s using a real instrument which considering my Depeche Mode dig isn’t such a bad idea. I know she’s looking at using her gloves to extend the features of her drum kit so I could either use those sounds or her drums which could be fun. And we can film it and use that as our handin instead of a live performance – phew!!
