Supervisor

I’ve just found out that I’ve got Geoff as my supervisor. Hopefully I won’t drive him to despair! Anyways, next deadline is this Friday when we have to hand in a draft abstract and our bibliography which hopefully won’t be too difficult as my proposal ought to make up most of my abstract

Metromix 2

So, finally finished and handed in my Metromix. As I said before, this was made up of a clip taken from the Anime film Metropolis and our own soundtrack composition. Following on from my experiments with mixing my recorded sounds thru’ Live, I decided to only use sounds that I had “made” myself instead of pre-recorded samples, although I did relent with the arc-ing at the end and used a sound effect I had knocking around coz I couldn’t quite get the right sound I wanted.

Imposing that condition probably made the task that much harder and possibly took me longer but it was quite satisfying being inventive. For example, the guy hitting the scaffolding pole with a hammer plus various different effects and treatment courtesy of Audacity made up most of the beats that you can hear. Still, why not have a listen yourself and click the link below.

Project proposal

My initial proposal for my project is to make a learning/teaching “thing” for children with autism. Although people with the disorder share symptoms, autism affects each sufferer differently so I want this thing to be tailorable to “fit” the individual. I’m saying “thing” at the moment coz I don’t know if I want to make a package of software or make a total immersion environment. I’m leaning toward the latter but I’m a bit concerned about time scales. Whatever I do, it has to be made using open source tools for two reasons. Firstly cost, as I see it being of use to special needs schools it has to be affordable – these schools are a bit strapped for cash as it is without forking out on new tools. And secondly, I’d like other people to build on it and adapt it as nesessary. It would be nice to see open source being taken up by education but that’s another issue.

Efford Moves

I’ve just done another v-mob workshop. This one was with Sue Smith as part of the Effordmoves project. Along with Steve and Kate, I provided the technical expertise to help the children shoot their dancing on video mobile phones and then edit them. It was quite intense towards the end coz even though we were there for 6 hours as usual everything really kicked in in the last coupla hours. The videos are likely to be online in the next coupla days so keep checking the website.

We only come out at night

We only come out at night jelly
I discovered this tucked away in the exhibition section of the Processing site. As they say on their site, it’s “an urban graffiti project involving interactive public projections”. Essentially they find a site and set up hidden projectors and project these “jellies” onto a wall. If the jellies get angry, they grab the shadow of a passer-by and eats it. The next day, they move onto a different site. They’ve also set up a site to help promote and create a mythology.

10 men – we only got 10 men

Sky cameraman at Home ParkSky were in town today which usually means either we’re in for a hammering or it’ll be one of the biggest bore-draws of the season. I must admit, I did fear the latter during the first half. It wasn’t very exciting sat there so I dread to think how it must have looked on the box. Then, against the run of play we’re 1-0 up. I know it was a penalty and the purist might not consider it a “real” goal but then you don’t get many purists supporting Argyle. Derby equalised quite soon after with what looked to us (even without green tinted specs) a well offside goal but the game suddenly came to life…..just in time for half time.

So the second half gets under way and within a matter of minutes we’re down to 10 men. Why? Coz apparently the muppet with the whistle decided that fairly winning the ball is a bookable offence and as Matt was already on 1, he sent him off. Down to 10 men against one of the “form” teams, 1-1 would have been a good result. But no, Argyle then decide that the best form of defence is attack so they go for it. Another pen and a back post header and we’re only 3-1 up. We did so much pressuring that we made one of their defenders clear it for a corner from just inside his own half!!

That’s another 3-1 home win, we’re up to 5th AND Edworthy got into a strop again. What a nice way to spend Sunday afternoon.

Mixing

I’ve spent most of the afternoon going thru’ the sounds I recorded yesterday. Some are a bit disappointing as you can’t really make a lot out but others are nice and clear. I’ve run them thru’ Live adding effects, slowing and speeding them up and have got some pretty crazy sounds. I’ve got a couple of them below.

Original – scaffold pole being hit
Remixed pole 1
Remixed pole 2
Remixed pole 3
Remixed pole 4
Remixed pole 5

Some influences

Seeing as this year is about hacking, I’m quite keen to make a piece of machinima and the 2 pieces that I have really inspired me are The Journey and Person2184 both made by Friedrich Kirschner.

Second Life

Chris proposed that we have a seminar in Second Life so I’ve just spent the last 45 minutes trying to get it to work. I’ve created the name Pintof Ginsberg and have downloaded both the PC and Mac version but neither will work. The PC version runs thru’ the start up and then crashes each time whereas the Mac version logs me on and even brings up Orientation Island before hanging the Mac. Definitely not a good thing. I’m gonna have a trawl thru’ the forums to see if there are any clues but I think that’ll have to wait until tomorrow.
