Film Archive

Joasia arranged for us to visit the South West Film Archive this afternoon. What a fantastic place. Loads of old TV and film footage, both professional and amateur, of the the South West. We were shown around the place, had a look at the equipment and were taken into a vault. The first set of film I saw when I walked into the vault was of Westward Diary 1st January 1962 – 5th January 1962 – the week I was born! What a wicked coincidence. Never one to miss an opportunity, I dropped off a card for OpenReel and she seemed quite keen on it. It would be brilliant if we could get them involved somehow.

Machinima

I’ve really started to get into machinima recently. I’ve seen a few episodes of Red vs Blue but that’s about it. During a talk given by Mike Salmond last week, he said he was interested in games as an art form and someone asked him what he thought about Machinima so I thought I’d have a look around. Machinima.com has loads listed as well as some tips on how to make them. World of Warcraft – Shutup and Dance! is well worth a look as is James Bond: No Licence but The Journey is just fantastic. It’s based on Unreal Tournament 2004 and couldn’t be more different. Then check out Person2184 which is also based on Unreal Tournament 2004.

Apart from them being visually stunning, I think I like them coz they match what I now consider to be the underlying idea of my project in that they’re following the true hacker’s remit that Wark talked about. They’re taking something, a finished product and building upon it to produce something else, something completely different to the original.

Cornish Film Festival

This weekend was really busy. Spent all day Friday and Sunday afternoon at the Cornish Film Festival doing a workshop for the uni called v-mOb which involved using mobile phones to shoot video. I was allocated micro-movies whilst some of the others did stop frame animation under the title of micro-mation. Considering we only had 2 hours in each workshop, the stuff that was done, in particular, by the scholl school children on Friday was brilliant.

So being away for 2 days meant that Saturday was rushed. Shopping, ferrying Tom to and from football and constructing a bed for our loft somehow manged to get done. No wonder I’m knackered!
