Plan of attack – part 1

I think the structure of my essay will be along these lines:

Introduction – briefly talk about gifts, the gift economy and open source development and distribution. Outline the structure of the rest of the chapters
Gifts – examine gift giving in other cultures as in the research by Mauss, blood donations and the gift as a tool for solidarity. Also look at how artists have to distinguish between the gift of their art and making a living.
Open source – brief explanation of its history, look at the rise of open source using linux and Netscape Navigator/Firefox as examples, the collaborative nature of working and the importance of the internet to it.
Project – describe the project, how it relates to gifts/giving and open source and document its progress.
Conclusion – go over relevant points and how they fit in with the suggestion that open source is a viable alternative to the market economy model of software development and distribution. Also on the success (or not) of the project.

For the project, I still need to decide which base distro to go for. I’m leaning towards Ubuntu but might have to bite the bullet and experiment with a few. I’m gonna have a chat with some linux gurus I know both online and in the real world and see what they suggest. Once I’ve sorted that out, will draw up a list of applications that I want to include and then make it…..and document it at the same time to help plan for the workshop. Talking of which, I need to speak to Caroline at PAC and see if there might be interest in doing one there. I need to get my head around how I’m gonna market/distribute it. I really like the idea of it “going solo” but I keep coming back to the idea of having some sort of affiliation as it would no doubt help to raise its profile. I think I need to ponder this some more.

Proposal

For my project I intend to create a portable system that users can carry round with them on a usb flash storage device. Based on Linux it will contain utilities that can be used by creatives. The user will be able to plug it into any computer, boot from it and use their data on the device as if it was on the hard drive of the host. Then once they have finished, the user will be able to shut the host down and remove the device taking their files with them.

For my thesis I want to examine the theory of gift giving and the bond it creates between the giver and the receiver. Do people give gifts without expecting something in return or are all gifts returned in one way or another? I am particularly interested in the growth of the gift economy amongst the hacker community and want to explore it being a viable alternative to the market economy.

Midi update

I’ve been a bit lapse in charting my progress in this……mainly coz my progress has been pretty slow in my opinion. Anyways, I’ve been working on doing the visuals mainly coz I’ve not been able to get Processing to talk to the midi controller and I’ve not been able to get over to the lab to spend any amount of time to work out why, until today. I essentially removed everything (Processing, all of its midi libraries and mmj), re-installed it all and it worked. Using scripts provided with the libraries I was able to list the midi controller and I knocked up a test which wrote coloured circles to the stage depending on the values obtained which you can see below. So now i just need to put it all together with my existing scripts, write some more and then do a test with the skeleton.

Furby update

All the furbies I got from eBay have arrived although 3 weren’t as advertised. They were essentially beanie babies so I complained and got the guy to give me a full refund…..which I used to buy 2 more. This is possibly getting a bit obsessive. I’ve also ordered an ir tester from Maplins so that I can at least prove (if only to myself) that the transmission is working. So anyway, here’s a foto of all my new furbies

New furbies

Get in!!!

Just got 3 more furbies off of eBay!!

YES!!!

I lost out on 2 but I won 2. Three more to go – exciting stuff eh!

eBay

There’s some furbies for sale on eBay and I’m currently bidding for 7. Keep everything crossed!

Cable trace

With the help of the circuit diagram and the stripped furby, I think I’ve managed to isolate the wires to the ir sensors which are on the larger block on the left in the photo below. The wires from the speaker are a bit harder coz they’re red, orange, black and brown so they could be in the same block or the one on the right….or even in a smaller block on the other side of the furby. As this is my broken one, I can’t just pull the blocks out and see what happens. I NEED more furbies!!
